VE Day

Today is VE Day. On May 8th 1945 Nazi Germany surrendered unconditionally, ending World War II in Europe. These days it is an anniversary that does not get much attention. The American men who fought that war are almost all gone. Polls show that large percentages of young people are mainly or totally ignorant of the war’s history. Our schools and media should do better. My father was in the Pacific in World War II, but a couple of my uncles served in Europe. This is a good day to remember them and the millions of others from many countries who defeated Nazism and saved civilization. It also should be a day to try to teach young people who perhaps never knew any of them about what they did and what it meant.
